Fibroscan is a non-invasive Hepatology procedure that helps assess the health of the liver. Specifically, it uses ultrasound technology to determine the degree of fibrosis or scarring that may be present in your liver from various liver diseases or conditions.
You should not eat or drink anything 3 hours before the test. Similar to an ultrasound, food and liquids in your stomach (and urine in your bladder) can make it difficult for the technician to get a clear picture of the structures in your abdomen.
Day of Fibroscan:
The Fibroscan takes about 30 minutes to complete, and it is not painful. However, some slight pressure may be felt throughout the examination. During the exam, one of our Fibroscan technicians will place some gel on your skin, between your ribs on your right side. A small probe will then be gently moved across your skin to analyze whether there is any fibrosis in your liver. After the procedure, the gel will be cleaned from your skin and you can leave the procedure suite. You will be able to drive yourself home.
